Risk Economics, Inc. sponsored the second annual TEDx Manhattan 2012: Changing the Way we Eat. This one-day TEDx event explored the food system as we shift to a more sustainable way of eating and farming. The goal of “Changing the Way We Eat” was to create new synergies, connections and collaborations across disciplines, to unite different areas of the food movement, and to introduce the TEDx audience to the exciting and innovative work being done in this field. The event hosted approximately 400 participants, and also included live webcasts to provide access to viewers worldwide. The event was organized by Diane Hatz of Glynwood and the TEDx Manhattan organizing team, and held in NYC at the Time Square Center.
Speakers for the TEDx 2012 included the following:
- Fred Kirschenmann of the Leopold Center for Sustainable Agriculture,
- Robert Lawrence, Johns Hopkins University,
- Mitchell Davis of the James Beard Foundation and
- David Wallinga, Institute for Agriculture and Trade Policy.

In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized. (Subject to certain rules and regulations.)
